line your eyes with non water proof black eye liner and then wash your face. Works everytime. Not scrub, mind you, because you're not trying to take it off, just gently wash.

I'm going to explain it with smokey black, you can substitute it for charcoal, dark khaki, or whatever color you like
1. Line inner rims of bottom and top eyelids with black eyeliner.
2. Take a shadow sponge (you know, the ones that come with your drugstore shadows), or q-tip and smudge the eyeliner gently to form a circle around the eye(gently, you don't want to look like the corpse's bride)
3. Go around the lined area with black shadow (or shadow of choice), with a sponge, make sure to start with as little shadow as possible.
4.Take an eye shadow brush an again, very little shadow concentrate color on the outer half of the eye, forming a < shape.
5. Blend!!!!! Blend until the entire lid is smoked up with the black eye shadow. Do not add more shadow.
6. Take a champagne colored (or silvery) eye shadow and apply it with your brush on the browbones, maybe a little down the side of the nose, and a little under your eyes.
Voila! Smokey eyes...Be sure to pair with a light peach blush and a beige / nude lip. The eyes are the focus here!

When doing a smokey eye, start with the eye makeup first before applying foundation. It's easier to clean up any fallen shadow without messing up your entire makeup. This also avoids the dark raccoon look under the eye. First start with a sheer color all over the eye. Go from lid to brow. Next, apply a dark brown or plum eyeshadow from your lid to your crease. Since the look is smudged and smokey, use creme shadows and apply them with either your fingers or a synthetic makeup brush. Next, line the entire eye with a dark brown or plum eyeliner. For this look, pencil works the best. If you want a more glamorous eye, line the inner rim of your eye as well. Follow with two-three coats of black mascara. Curl the lashes first to really open up the eye. Now I think you're all set.

Always use an eyeliner the same shade as the shadow. Also, some people do not look good with their whole upper lid covered with the shadow. That is why it is better to apply the shadow in the shape of "<" and ">" on the upper outer corner of the eyes.

It's too hard to explain online. Go to a mall and ask the people at MAC or something like that to help you. They are usually more than happy to show you what to do. But don't get tricked into buying their expensive brushes. You can get good ones at Sally's and sometimes Wal-mart.
