Assuming you live to be 100 and you begin working at age 20 for 40 hours per week for 50 weeks out of the year (2 weeks vacation) and retire at age 65.

45 years worked
50 weeks per year
40 hours per week
90,000 hours worked

100 years lived
365 days per year
24 hours per day
876,000 hours lived

90/876 = 10.3% of your total living hours are spent working

If you assume you sleep 7 hours per day you can subtract 255,500 hours from your total life, leaving 620,500 hours lived awake

90/620.5 = 14.5% of your total waking hours are spent working

You may need to make minor adjustments for lunch breaks and commute time, and holidays.

Think about it for a minute. You can't know that for an individual without knowing how long the person lives. Also, some are lazy, can't find jobs, or otherwise are away from work.
