Speaking as a zoologist, I've heard it pronounced either way, and no one seems to have a problem with understanding what you're talking about.
In zoology, there are quite a few words that are pronounced completely differently depending on which zoologist says it. That's because a lot of the time we only see the name printed in a paper or textbook somewhere, and each zoologist seems to come up with a different way of actually pronouncing it. I remember one time going to a lecture about some obscure critter. The lecture was given by the dude who actually named the critter in the first place, and when he started talking we were all taken aback when we realized that we had all been pronouncing it the wrong way for several years.
When presented with an alternate version, most zoologists just automatically assume that they must have been the one pronouncing it incorrectly.
I did some weird looks for pronouncing anthropology as 'an-THROP-oe-lodge-ee' once though.

I am actually a zoologist, and I say ZOEologist and so do all the other zoologists I have ever met. I always notice that people who are not scientists say ZOOologist. I think both pronounciations are acceptable.

Zoologist is made of zoo'- logy like biology is made of bios-logy . Zoo refers to animals in Greek similar to Bios means life ..Logus(logy) means 'study of' Hence Zoo Logy is the study of animals and Biology Hence the correct spelling and pronunciation goes with Zoology

You can say it either way. I personally say it so the "Zoo" part sounds like "yo" Yo-ology = zoology. But i know some other people who say ZOOlogy.
And the catch is, we ARE zoologists.

I think it's just one of those words that is spoken differently depending on what part of the country you're from... you know, like 'to-may-to' or 'to-mah-to' ... the Northerner's accent is different from a Southerner's accent. Neither you or the kid is really wrong.

Count the "O"s. Zooology is an offshoot of Bioology, a ridiculous science at best.
