look for nvidia 7900 or ati 1900 video cards in the machines....a "SLI" or "crossfire" settup of those SAME cards will be even better and more expensive because it ties two cards together for much increased performance...thats what i have...a sli7800gt settup and it rocks but since 7900 is the latest get those... those machines with those cards will have topnotch performance. there are various models of the same numbered cards like GTX or XT so research those two cards to see which is the best and to know the various levels of performance...... to max out the latest games quality settings u need a SLI or Crossfire settup of some good cards...but i would say the lower level of performance you will want to go with is a nvidia 7800gt or 1800xt single card. Dont even worry about the other specs on the machine coz any machine that has those cards will be fine....the only thing u might want to consider other than the cards is the memory....2gigs is better for gaming these days....and lastly a RAID settup for the harddrives will speed up load times. Thats about it...get a machine based on what i told you there and you'll be rockin...

You gotta check out with Dell's range of Media Center PC's with a very good configuration of a dual core processor,80 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM and a very good and compatible Graphics accelarator card which would satisfy all your gaming needs..Theres always an option to upgrade your PC, but this configuration would be enough for most of the high end games running on Windows XP.

What kind of gaming though, just things like Diablo type RPGs, or serious graphics pushing ones like Half-Life2?

I'd suggest to go with custom gaming machines that are designed for hi preformance gaming, and are built in a way that allows for easy upgrading of video cards and such for the future.

Core 2 Duo, more than a gigabyte of ram should be a start.

I suggest Falcon Northwest or Alienware computers.

Alienware has a very solid reputation for good "gaming" computers. However, please note that virtually any computer sold these days can be used to handle "all the high tech games". The question is, how well does each computer provide the graphics for these games? The answer ranges from "okay" to "insanely fast" -- and you will need to tradeoff your pocketbook with your need for "insanely fast" graphics.

If you want it to handle gaming and such build it yourself. You'll save money and always something new to learn. If you don't feel comforatable I'd like you to steer away from Alienware. They have notoriously bad customer service.

If you want a high end computer that has some balls then get a falcon northwest PC. Much higher quality.

I own an Alienware Area 51. It is a total horse as I have been abusing it for years. Careful here though as Dell computers has recently acquisitioned Alienware so I hope they don't screw it up!
Their tech support will probably go to India just as Dell's has.

1GB Ram
Updated Video Memory
Mercury Motherboard
SeagateBaracuda Hard disk
PIV 3.8 Processor
Win 98 OS
Note:- For games 98 is the best OS as it supports Max DOS and Most of the games r developed in MS DOS platform.
Many HDisks crashes while playing games, but SB is really good.

The Dell XPS laptops are sold on the merit that they can handle games, but they cost $3,000 and more. The Dell website can recomend computers based on the games they can handle.
