Hate to say this, but a engineer that worked for Mercury designed the first outdive as we know it, he sold the idea to Volvo, as the story goes. The idea for the dual prop came out of the early aircraft years, Volvo built the first recreational dual prop drive, 10 years later came the Bravo 3.
To answer your question, both drive systems are good, they are using basically the same engine packages. Pick the boat you like that does what you want it to and take care of it, if you don't either one will fail.

Volvo Penta invented the i/o. They had a patent for 25 yrs. After that is when Merc. came out with their own duo prop outdrive. But the still don't have the specs on the props yet! Volvo makes a great product. Only draw back is finding a service dealer in your area.

Mercury is the best in marine power and I/O,s , they are a bit more complicated then the Volvo but you will have much better dealers available for parts with Mercury
