From "LookSmart":

"The irritating insects, known as Limothrips Cerealium, or 'thunder flies', fly in from cornfields in rural areas every summer and make their nests inside automatic fire alarms inside factories, offices and public buildings"

I'm assuming that they are either in the cornfield (if you are near one) or in the fire alarms! LOL!! Thanks for the great question. Never heard them called that before. Check the link for more info.

Doin a rain dance? Theyre probably quite happy doing what thunder flies do and then just before the storm the air gets muggy and this will force them away from their place

I don't know, but one of them has got in behind my laptop screen and is now a permanent fixture of my computer life.

Top tip... don't leave your laptop open if you don't want your own resident thunder fly.
