They are made of latex and that's just what latex smells and tastes like. Unfortunately, they need to be flexible and strong and not prone to leaks.
Prior to the introduction of latex condoms, condoms were made from sheep intestine, and while I don't know what they tasted like they didn't have the smell. Even when latex became popular the Ramses and Trojan Natur-Lamb condoms made from intentine were popular (though premium priced). While they were effective in preventing pregnancy and most STD's with the onset of AIDS, it was discovered that the virus which causes AIDS, HIV was small enough to pass through the lamb intestine walls, and they have fallen off in popularity. I do believe you might still be able to get them.
For people who are alergic to latex, a couple of companies have come up with a latex-free condom made of poly-propelene or some such substance. They feel and look like the material a Baggie sandwich bag is made from. The problem with them is that they are neither as flexible, nor as strong. I guess they would smell and taste more neutral, like a Baggie.
There are flavored condoms, or flavored lubes to use with a condom, but I have yet to have a pleasant taste when eating latex.!

The smell could be the latex. Do you find it similar to that of a glove in a doctor's office? It could also be the spermicidal lubrication on the condom. if you're using condoms for oral sex (which is a very wise thing to do), you should get some that are not lubricated.

Do I need to mention that you don't eat them??

Probably has to do with the fact that most condoms are latex, and treated so that any lubricants used during sex won't break them down. I have heard of flavored condoms, but since I'm a lesbian I don't know too much about those.

I do not think they are nasty at all. I have had a lot of fun using them, so I have good associations with the smell and taste (except for the lubes and spermicides, of course).

Some have a spermicide on them nonoxyl 9. If they are unlubricated ones it may be the latex that you are smelling. If you are concerned, I would suggest the flavored ones!

the spermicide is what tastes nasty and/or the latex. try the flavored ones.
don't pay any attention to the dorks with the comments about not eating them. they obviously don't practice safe sex. :)
