Don't listen to Dontaskmeanything, he is talking rubbish.
Always keep a 'notice' letter brief. It should include the date of the letter, your full name and address and any works number you may have. Then, always include the words 'it is with regret' as you may need a reference later. You can include words like 'due to financial rearrangements' or 'to take up a position in another city', but NOT - 'the ***** that sits next to me' or such. Finally, thank the company for all their help in the past. Also, most importantly, ask for an acknowledgment........

if u hated the job write and the boss is an asshole its good to write some bad names and use some really dirty words
but if u liked the place and the people then write how grateful u r to them for giving u an oppurtunity to be a part of their team and how u wish u cud stay more but due to certain reasons like family problem or a better job oppurtunity u have to leave
but if they want u to stay u can try and how u hope that they will give u the proper references

Keep the letter brief, don't go in to a lot of details about why you don't like your job, the company, your boss. If you want to communicate that information then do so verbally to someone in H.R. or in management. Remember that your letter will be kept in your personnel file for years to come and is subject to subpeona if there is any problems down the line. It isn't your chance to "stick it" to someone. Leave with your head up and do it professionally.

Dear :

Please accept this letter as notice of my intent to leave employment with (company) as of (date). I appreciate the opportunities that have been provided to me at (company) and would like to thank you for the chance to work for you.

I will be available for the next two weeks for any questions or training of a replacement prior to my departure.

Thank you.

Tell them why you are leaving (honestly) and that you are officially giving them your two week notice. And that you would love to have some references from them if you were a good employee. This way you can take these on future job interviews.

Very nicely inform them that you will be leaving in two weeks. That you enjoyed your time with the company but, alas, it's time to move on to bolder and broader horizons. Be upbeat and positive. Don't give the impression that you might be holding a grudge. DON'T burn your bridges. Old friends can be very helpful in later years. Don't tell them why your leaving unless they ask. Then be honest.

That you're leaving. Make it cordial if you want a future recommendation, also talk to your supervisor and see what suggestions they have.
