If Macs got infected, they could pass that infection to other Macs. But since they represent fewer than 5%, this reduced the possibility of infection.

In general, if you were to develop quality software for 5% of the market, why would you? It goes the same for a virus writers. Why take the time to infect NOBODY?

There are a number of hackers and virus writers that simply resent Microsoft. They have chosen to go after that platform.

But the Mac also has some very high quality security features that are a part of the system. Typical security holes, where viruses could LEAK into the system simply do not exist. This is the same with the LINUX operating system.

I do fear that the new Intel based Macintosh will be more susceptible to viruses. There may be some cross-over infections from the PC world. Also, I believe that it is foolish for people to BUY a Mac, then use it primarily with the Windows platform. That would be just as vulnerable as a regular Windows computer.

It can be. It's just that with PC's being about 90% of the marketplace, hackers have written fewer Mac viruses. Mac viruses also take longer to spread because of all those PCs out there. But...there have actually been Mac viruses and spyware that infects Macs.

The reason that Macs haven't been infected is there wasn't enough of them being used to justify the hackers spending time to infect them. Now that they are selling more of them the hackers have started infecting them. Do a google for macs and viruses and you will see.

They can be infected with viruses, but aren't usually as big a target due to their lower market penetration. More people use windows than macs, so most people developing malicious code try to develop it to hit the most people.

Most hackers don't bother with Macs because the PC is owned by more people, and infecting them can cause more disruption. :) So, they technically CAN be, but it almost NEVER happens, because it's not worth the time and effort to write the script for it.

They can be but there are so few users it is hardly wothwhile.

They are also so clunky that the users would probably think a virus was an improvement.

Much to my shame I have a Mac. Good for photographs and music but as a PC it is rubbish!!

Both can be infected. Mac's aren't affected as much because nobody owns one, everybody owns a pc.
