Ok - once upon a time there was an egyptologist called Auguste Mariette who was working in Egypt and was asked to think up an Ancient Egyptian story for an opera for the new Cairo Opera House. He came up with the story of Aida, I don't think it was every written down like a short story or anything like that.

Anyway, the story idea was offered to the famous Italian composer Verdi, who said he'd do it and a hack poet called Antonio Ghislanzoni wrote some words (they are in a rather hi falutin' style and can't really be read like a book) and Verdi wrote some ravishing music and one very famous tune - Da DAAA de de de dum dum dum di di di dum di dum da da di di dum da di dum da di dum da di deee!
:D

A few years back some idiot made a musical about it - a bit like reusing Shakespeare's plots - doesn't really make much sense when there's a wonderful original.

Wikipedia has a summary of the plot but why not try an borrow the opera from your local/school library on CD, they'll have a little book of the words with it and it really is very beautiful.
