Being interested in where your ancestors are from and how they lived their lives and what contributions they made to humanity is much more than an interest but a vital part to understanding who we are as a people and where we fit in at the table of humanity.

I think that white people IN GENERAL or should I say people in general dont like it when they arent included fully into something. The less they know, the more that its intimidating. Black history is something that whites dont know about, or like. I think that lots of blacks dont either which is why we see so many of us with blonde hair and blue eyed contacts (i.e. not very afrocentric). I think that being afrocentric is very much about being proud of being black and whites IN GENERAL are very intimidated by that because they dont know a lot of black folks that feel that way and the ones that do, arent calling each other N*gga and such.

I think many are yes. The european cultural norm can be very constrictive.
Do I think they should be? No. Everyone has a cultural history and if you find someone else's "offensive" or "intimidating" then that person needs to get more in touch with that other culture. Face up to what confuses and discover more than yourself.
Ethnocentrism is never a good thing when you leave other people and their cultures outside the gates of your mind and life. It's a two way street that can lead to a lot of great new experiences and God help us if we were all the same- how boring and useless would that be?
One note though: One should not push their culture on someone else, if you get my meaning. Making a bad impression on someone who has no knowledge of your culture can cause REAL offenses. It can come back to bite you in the *** if you aren't respectful of others.
It's all about being responsible for and to each other.

I don't pretend to speak for "white folks" but I really don't think people in general really get up every morning worrying about other races. Question to you asker: Tell me how being interested in a culture means anything special...it's just an interest is all. Black folks in general don't know diddly about African people! By the way I hate that term African American, European American! Give me a break...we are all freakin Americans, we just hopped off different boats!

Well, I couldn't find a word spelled Afrocentricism but I found Afrocentrism.
Centered or focused on Africa or African peoples, especially in relation to historical or cultural influence.Afrocentrism is also a scholarly, historiographical approach to the study of world history, with connections to black civil rights movements and anti-imperialist ideologies in the United States and the Caribbean.
Now I am definitely intimidated. (: The melting pot of culture is one thing that is so cool about the USA.

The people that are intimidated or offended by Afrocentrism are usually poorly informed, narrow minded or a little too absorbed in their own Euro-centric life to look at things from a different angle. I personally think its very important to have a strong interest in one's heritage. Sometimes it can be a little unnerving if an individual is too focused on thier own background, but that's usually only when that focus borders on prejudice. No one who respects another person should be offended by their connection to their ancestry.

A lot of times i think the issue isnt the intimidation, but sometimes an african centered perspective is closed minded. For me its not intimidating, but i just believe that people should be in the middle and open to everything. If you are just on one side, eitherway its not fair. A lot of white people are intimidated by it yes, but its only because they dont understand it and they are being naiive. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Why cant everyone just be open minded and accepting of others opinions...haha i guess when pigs fly right?

I remember how popular it was about 10 years ago, but it was surrounded in the hip hop genre. Well I was in H.S. then and was a little jealous. It was kinda cool to have a love of your culture. I could never do that because I would be branded a straight out racist. I am not offended if it done tastefully. You should be proud of where you came from but America is all our home now.

Intimidated, no. Offended, sometimes. Exasperated, definitely. Basing everything you do or say (or vote, or judge in a courtroom) based on them being the same race as you, is foolish to the nth degree. That's like me giving all those preferences to another woman even if a man is better, or to a blonde, even when the brunette is better, etc.
Look at New Orleans and the Katrina aftermath, for example. Everyone blamed the president, but it was first and foremost the mayor's responsibility to appropriate manage the threat and the aftermath and he failed TOTALLY. But he was re-elected. How do you explain that? Stupidity. Pure and simple.

i think it shld be stopped coz now more whites hate Africans coz of all these, everytime you switch on to tv, all they see is Africa having this and that problems, and begging for help, and ofcourse when the government deciide to help the cash comes from the taxpayer's money, and this has created more racism, coz now whites feel more superior than blacks.
i as a black person hate it when i see news about Africa.
also the media is to blame coz they never show anything positive about Africa, when there are so many other things apart from AIDS and poverty, eg... they shld now replace all those horror news about Africa and replace them with exotic wild animals of Africa, the African culture, how hard people are working to fight poverty, which is true, we are really fighting, only our leaders are letting the Africans down, but the common man works really hard.

How many "Afrocentrists" can find Africa on a map? It might be a good idea for an American to have an American perspective.
