well you're already stacking the cards against yourselves. if you honestly want to try and stay together, then you need to be willing to compromise. try emails, send letters anyway (they're romantic and a great physical reminder of your boyfriend/girlfriend), and download an instant messenger program (ie. AOL IM, MSN or Yahoo Messenger) so you can talk to each other online.

What do you mean calling long distance is too expensive? Have you ever heard of calling plans? I have an unlimited long distance plan with a major phone provider and I pay only $70 bucks a month after taxes are added. You can also purchase calling cards priced as low as 3 cents per minute. Hang in there if you want the relationship to work it can work. My wife and I not only maintained a relationship but recently got married. Good luck and God bless. Peace.

Well you are refusing to take advantage of the modern technology that was meant to solve this problem, so I don't know what to tell you. Emails and IM were made for this sort of thing.
However you end up communicating with her (and do it often), just tell her that you miss her but you hope she is having fun while you aren't there, and that you can't wait to get back together and hear all of her crazy stories. Make her feel like you are still a part of her every day life, and not just some voice on the phone (or guy on the internet) she talks to once a night.

Since I don't know you or your girl, it is difficult to say. However, I can tell you that my wife and I have gotten through it twice.
Right now I'm in Iraq, and my wife is in Missouri. This is our second time going through this. Of course we hate being apart, and I miss her every day. Using the phone is insanely expensive (I used it for a few months before I realized how much it cost, and ended up paying several thousand dollars), and mail is unreliable at best. E-mail, although impersonal, at least serves as a reminder that the other person is at least thinking about you.
I guess the only advice I have is to simply look forward to the time when you can be together again, instead of agonizing over your time apart. Every time I talk to my wife or e-mail her, I tell her how much I miss her and can't wait to see her. If your girl really cares for you, and wants you in her life, she'll wait for you. A year really isn't that long in the grand scheme of things anyway.

Then you have a problem. Most cell phone companies have plans with FREE long distance. Get a cell phone. Most regular telephone companies have special plans where you can cheap or free long distance too! And how can anyone in this day and age and technology be uncomfortable with sending and receiving emails? That's nuts! The only other way is good old regular mail.

It sounds like you don't want to keep it too badly. You've already ruled out all your options. No offense; just the opinion of one outsider looking in.
