If our citizens were only allowed to have one or two babies, would that help or hurt our country?
I have heard that In China, you are helped by the government if you have only one child. Whereas in our country you are helped by our government if you behave like a rabbit.

I have no opinion, but would like to hear the pros and cons.
My only problem with the "being rewarded for behaving like rabbits" is--guess who is paying them to have babies.

No, I would never live in a country with a government that told me what I could and could not do with respect towards my family. That is what you get in a communist government.

It may sound great to you, but I have been to China, I have seen how the majority of people live, they are living in extreme poverty. This is not how I would want to live.

And the US is a very large country, we could easilty fit twice as many people in the country and still not be overpopulated.

Besides, who is to say a large family is not a good thing? I know of several people who came from families of 4 -7 people and they have wonderful relationships with their siblings and will for the rest of their lives. That is very beautiful if you ask me, and I would hardly qualify their parents as rabbits. Just two very unselfish people who are willing to raise many children.

The only bad thing would be if the parents did not take care of their children but continued to have more. Then they should be put in prison for abuse.

This is kinda a d***ed if you do and d***ed if you don't thing. I work in the social service field and see women getting pregnant because they are irresponsible in how they live. My first thought is often that there needs to be a limit because the children have a really tough life trying to get their basic needs met *with* the government assistance they receive. So when a mother has 5 children already that aren't getting their basic needs consistently met and then she gets pregnant with another, I get angry because it's not fair to the children nore to us that are paying to support this mother's irresponsibility. But you can't take the government assistance away because you are then punishing the children. I don't believe there should be a limit on the family size because I have seen families of 8 to 15 children be very successful. I think it comes down to more education and interventions being needed in helping those make more responsible choices though that is hard to do.

China can do that because they are under communist rule, even though components of capitalism have caught hold.

Having large families was a necessity in the past to ensure the survival of the family - kids died from numerous illnesses, plus kids could help support the family on thier farms or elsewhere. It's not so much important to have large families anymore, but some people still do, for various reasons. As long as these large families aren't on the government dollar, I don't have a problem with this.

I have also heard that many people in China kill their baby if they are a girl, so maybe it really isn't that much better. I think what we DO need to do in the United States is make women more aware of where they can get birth control (you can get it from Planned Parenthood for $5 which is much cheaper than caring for an infant) and not let them think they can depend on welfare when they do have five children.

I think more importantly we should prevent the cycle of poverty by not letting people have babies who are in no position to care for them: druggies, high school dropouts, criminals, etc. This creates a huge burden on society.

And any family that has more than 5 kids is, in my opinion, nuts. Big families used to be a plus when there was a high death rate among infants and farms needed tending to. Now, that is not the case...it is outdated.

In summary, I kind of agree with you, to a point!

I am glad I am not the only one that thinks like this. But it will never happen- at least until it is too late. When you have groups and organizations that are against birth control, RU486 (and like drugs), masterbation, and sex education to say nothing about certain other things that gets the prude right in a tizzy- the future of this countries society to me looks pretty dim. Hope Im wrong.

Conditions in both countries are different,

China: Worlds largest population and the cannot afford to grow at the same rate. There would be wide-spread poverty and it will throw a spanner in their development plans.

USA: There is dearth of people here that we get people form outside the country to get the work done. Why shouldn't the govt. encourage people to reproduce more? Which means the money stays in the country. There are less illegal aliens. The only counter is that as a whole world population is growing.

No!... have you any idea what happens to the SOOOOOO many kids that "should" not have been born in China because there parents weren't allowed to have more?!?!?!?! Do you know what soooo many parents do with little girls?!?!?!?!? There are a few that get a "second" chance in a famliy that adopts the... but most of them are end up in the gutter.. many baby's are actually drowned... the size of a family should be the freedom of a family only!! If a famliy decided they can support x many kids, than that's up to them.

I think it's a responsible decision to limit the size of one's family. Overpopulation is the "elephant in the room" that no one's talking about.

However, it should not be government mandated. It's called "choice"; it's an individual person's/family's decision how many children they want to have, or if they want to have any.

The government should stay out of our private lives. And yes, this "choice" does include the choice to have an abortion.

I think it is everyones choice to have however many children they like, but I would like it if the people who reproduce and don't take care of the child/ children would have to be FIXED!!!!! That is not right to punish all people just because some don't know how to get a job, go to school, etc.... they need to step up to what they have done and take care of business!
