If you are planing to drive around town, to work, going out with a spolier is just a decoration and a waste of money. It can also reduce your fuel consumption if not properly set up. If you are racing then I dont need to explain anything to you, I know you are not so here it is: The spoler is intended to create downforce on the rear wheel drive vehicles in order for the weight of the vehicle to balance and privide traction to the rear wheels, depending on the type of racing will determine the type of spoiler, winged spoilers with flaps(F1 racing) are mainly to assist braking at cornering at high speeds, at low speeds they only serve the purpose of balancing the vehicle. Flat spolier are only for downforce and dont assist cornering(Nascar vehicles). Also keep in mind that spoilers are only effective in rear wheel vehicles as it helps distribute the weight in high speeds. Front wheel racing vehicles in the other hand using spoliers are uncontrolable at high speeds because the spoiler is designed to create lift, to add grip to the front, and balance the vehicle in some cases front wheel vehicle also use downforce spoilers and must add additional weight the front to balance the vehicle at high speeds making them ineficient at low speeds. Hope you changed your mind about wasting money, unless you have a rear wheel drive vehicle that is.

Yes, an appropriate spoiler can improve the performance, but NOT the speed. The spoiler produces down force which helps the car grip the road better in turns.

One warning: If you put a spoiler on a car be sure to add an air dam on the front bumper. If not steering may be adversely affected at higher speeds.

On a street machine, it hurts the performance much more than it helps it
The main function of a spoiler is to create down force to improve traction. On a road race it helps in high speed cornering. On a drag racer it keeps the tires from breaking loose at high speed.
Neither of these is required on a street machine
Creating down force has a cost - Drag.
To overcome this drag requires horsepower. This is not a issue on a race car as there is usually lots of it. Street cars usually don't have more than a few hundred horsepower so there's not much to spare.
Most people today are putting huge spoilers on the rear of front wheel drive cars. This is the last place you need down force on this type vehicle. The rear tires don't do much for cornering. They won't break loose during hard acceleration. Placing down force on the rear of a front wheel drive car takes weight off of the front wheels where you really need it.
Anyone who has ever driven a front wheel drive car near its limits knows that they tend to push or slide the front tires during hard cornering.
Spoilers on a street machine are just eye candy.

putting a swifter, or supercharger on a motor vehicle gained't make human beings imagine your a ricer.... i'd choose eliminating parts first.... which incorporates: eliminating: - The spare tire and jack (keep a can of fix a flat interior the decrease back) 40-60lbs - A/C gadget (provided that you do not use it and also you intend to under no circumstances promote the motor vehicle because this may shrink the fee of the motor vehicle) 30-50lbs - get rid of the resonator and replace with an ordinary instantly pipe 15lbs Thats very nearly 125lbs actual there.. plus with the resonator lengthy gone you'll have a more effective flowing exhaust. also upgrading your muffler might want to be sensible with increasing HP besides All that performed and your motor vehicle will be a touch swifter, excited by about $50

On a street car it is just a decoration. On race cars their purpose is to 'push down' on the back of the car. At high rates of speed, the aerodynamic forces could lift the rear end if it did not have a spoiler.

in the real world on the street its just a kiddie fad to have a huge spoiler...only the small factory type spoilers look at all any good...and no they dont do anything except at race speeds when cornering...and most likely since the big kiddie spoilers are 999 out of 1000 times untuned to the vehical they would make them handle worse not better than no spoiler at all...a factory stock body would tear them up on a track with the same motor.

In general driving no, most passenger cars now are smooth enough to not need one except for styling. Spoilers are meant to clean up the air flow at the back of the car, this also helps keep dust off the back. The wings you see are more drag at normal speeds than they are worth. Most are also set too steep and only create turbulence, not down-force.

Yes and No....Yes because a spoiler catches the air and creates a downforce on the car creating better traction and stability.....No because it catches the air and creates a downforce on the car also creating extra resistance therefore causing a loss in Gas Mileage....
