First, use a wet & dry shop vac to clean up the mud.
Start drying the carpet out by using a fan pointed at the carpet. Then use a shampooer or shop vac that sucks up the water to help get the excess water out. Finally, after getting out the excess water, shampoo the carpet & be sure to use a disinfectant like lemon Lysol with the shampoo in the hot boiling water you put into the shampooer.
Use a dehumidifier to help speed up the drying process.

Good Luck!

Start scooping out the mud-don't wait for it to dry it may if it's alot cause damage to your floors. Once the mud is gone -most of it, get some hot soapy water and start cleaning it up.It's gonna take a bit cuz your gonna have to keep going over the same area til it's all cleaned up. (you'll have to change your mop water several times to get it clean. You also may want to wear rubber gloves to your hands don't' dry out and crack and split) Your carpet may be a gonner, tho you may wanna try using a rug doctor to get rid of the mud. Good luck and watch out for mold and musty smells. If possible open and keep open your windows to help dry the carpets out and put fans on them.

Best bet to get mud out of anything is to let the mud dry to clay form and then get a broom and beat it out ... otherwise get the professionals to do it and keep the invoice and bill the insurance
