There one of the buzz band of 2006 that hail from the working-class society of Sheffield, England that took Europe by storm (the band set a record for having the highest selling debut album in the U.K. for "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not"). The band consist of hometown best friends Alex Turner (vocal/guitar) and Jamie Cook (guitar), as well as Andy Nicholson (bass) and Matt Helders (Drum). All of the band members are only 20 years old. The band was form when Turner and Cook recieve guitars as Christmas presents back in 2002 and a year later start practicing as a band, making cover tracks for such band as the White Stripes and the Vines. Several clubs shows later, the band caught the attention by an executive at Domino Records (who also represents Franz Ferdinand and Clinic) and sign them to a deal in 2004. Their hit single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", debut at number #1in the U.K. in late 2005 and soon the buzz on the band started to grow. Influenced by such bands as the Clash, the Smiths, and the Jam, the Arctic Monkeys usually write their songs based on the life of an average working-class citizen, in which people can relate, to go along with their U.K. punk-inspired sound that suit well enough for Britpop and alternative rock fans..
Most music critics hail the band as the next big thing (Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 stars, consider to be a classic by standard) and dominated the U.K. in many ways. However, despite the buzz in the U.S., Americans aren't sold to the band just yet, debuting outside the Billboard top 40. There is hope however that the buzz and exposure that the band is getting in the U.S. was enough to do sell-out shows all across the states (even making an apperance on Saturday Night Live) and are now going for their second run at the tour this summer. Even though they are the "it" band, the band doesn't want to be acknowledge by that. As Alex Turner said in the beginning of the "...Dance Floor" video, "Don't Believe the Hype".
As for my favorite song on that album, it would have to be "Still Take You Home".
