Here's the correct answer. The reason "racism" exists, is because there are many groups on both sides that continue to profit by its continued existence. Let's be honest...without racism, guys like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, David Duke, Matt Hale, et. al. would be out of a job. They take isolated incidents (on BOTH sides) and, sometimes with the help of the media, turn them into a huge problem, and generate a lot of money as a result for furthering their agenda.
The truth is that among the average US citizens, racism is actually minimal...the overwhelming majority of people adopt a "live and let live" attitude in their daily existence, regardless of their race.
And before you start ranting about how wrong I am...be HONEST and tell me the last time you ever PERSONALLY in your daily life, have actually encountered real racism in action... where you have suffered some real injury based on it. And I'm not talking about the speeding ticket you got from the white/black/whatever policeman. If you are honest with yourself, your answer will be "not anytime recently".
Children are born without racism; it has to be learned. The only perpetrators of actual racism are people who have been brainwashed that either whites or blacks or whomever else are inherently evil and thus they are the cause of all their woes...and this is done either by their leaders or by what they've learned from their families.
I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist...I'm saying that it has been blown out of proportion by those who stand to profit most by its existence, on both sides of the equation.

a number of those responses are ridiculous. As an American, i'm taking off to comprehend how racist Britain surely is. include range instead of wondering "Oh no!! they're taking on". I literary have friends from pretty a lot each way of existence plausible, and it has in truth made me a extra proper man or woman. Even the deep south of the US, which has a foul popularity for racism, isn't close to as undesirable as what I see on a number of those message forums. I grew up in an section the position i changed into the only white youngster, and that i changed into at situations discriminated antagonistic to, yet i do no longer make generalizations of all minorities because of it.

check out the movie crash. everyone is racist to everyone else, and there is really nothing to be done except teach the future generation acceptance, like the hippies did. And to educate everyone as to the effects of racism. I live in east texas and people are no more condesending ignorant black people than they are toward the overflowing white trash population, except for the fact that their deep south roots have implanted the n word in their vocabulary. Also you should try the Mya Angelo story "Why Blacks are Returning to Their Southern Roots" or something to that effect.

Some people need to feel that they are better than other people, to have someone to look down on.
This doesn't just manifest itself as racism, it's also sexism, homophobia, making fun of other cultures (rednecks, foreigners, homeless, other religions etc.)
When you do this, you dehumanize the other person or group of people, which makes it easier to not like or hate them.
What a wonderful world it'd be if we could all remember that we are all God's children, and we should treat others as we would like to treated ourselves.
