Most people are injured or killed by flying debris. A basement ususally has much fewer windows and the concrete foundation and steel beams will help protect you from materials hurled by the wind. You should think about where in the basement would be away from heavy furniture or appliances above you; like don't stay under the kitchen area where heavy appliances could fall through a collapsed floor. Check out this website for good details about how to protect yourself anywhere.

It is possible that the house could collapse on top of the basement, but you would still be safe inside and someone would look for you sooner or later. There are very few instances of people actually dying from being in a basement during a tornado. Being in the basement is a million times safer than being in the closet or bathtub in the house above it.

The house is more likely to blow away than to collapse. Even if the upper structure does collapse onto the floor, the floor is typically strong enough to carry that weight. To be more sure of finding safety in the basement, stay near an exterior wall; if the floor does collapse, it is more likely to do so at the center.

The house more than likely move the house debris upward and outward. Structurally there is more support in the basement, although when you look at many of the pictures on TV the houses look as if they just fell down. Move to the basement and you're better protected from this.

There is a chance of that, but, you would be "secure." No windows to crash about you with flying glass, etc. It would take a while for rescue, but, being in a basement is probably one of the most secure areas in the house from a tornado.

A tornado is like a vacuum, it sucks things upwards. The basement keeps you protected as there are things flying around

flying debris is the only right anwser. debris will be shot through your house like missles. wind will them get into the house. the air them will need to be released thus causing the roof to fail. its only a matter of time before the walls fail after that.

flying debris kills the most people in tornadoes, the safest place is to be underground underneath a table or something sturdy like a pool table

technically, but isnt being potential trapped in a little pocket of air between basement walls and fallen boards on top of you until you're rescued better than being sucked away with the roof?

cars can be thrown about, you would be tossed into the wind, slammed into walls, and crushed by the falling house.
