We revert to primative ways because humans are, quite literally, still primates. We still have within us all of the same desires and drives of our primitive ancestors. The advancements we enjoy are the recent result of a very intense development of a very specific and unique part of ourselves- our ability to reason.

Most of what motivates us in our day to day activities, the main driving forces behind our actions, are the same things that motivate other animals. We have a desire to attract sexual mates, to accumulate food and resources, to increase our status among our peers, and to defend ourselves from outside threats. Sometimes our technique is more sophisticated than that of animals, but the negative effects are just the same.

We are able to temper these forces by thinking things through; it's why most of us can forego striking someone who gets on our nerves. But that decision is still difficult, and sometimes our ability to think isn't enough to stop our natural urges.

I would compare our situation to a ship a sea. Most animals are like a raft- they'll go wherever the currents take them. We humans are like a simple sail boat- we're able to go against the current, and over time we might get better at using our sails, but we're still fighting an ocean...and often times, the ocean currents are stronger than our sails.

In all actuality, we are not that advanced. Only 100 or so years ago we still didn't know to wash our hands to get rid of germs and only 40 years ago we still used lead pipes for water. Humans are not advanced, we just think we are.
