Why did it use to be a normal thing to do to give a teen aged girl regular enemas?

When I was growing up, it use to be a ritual around our house to give my teenaged sister regular enemas, like weekly. It seems that her girlfriends all use to get them too. Why?

Holy crap... that's scary... NO... it has NEVER been a normal thing to give teenaged girls regular enemas.... sounds like there was something more than medical treatments going on in THAT house.!
