I work in retail, and let me say, from the way I see people waste money, it doesn't look to me like they're in hard times. If gas is really such a big problem, why do people keep buying SUVs and luxury cars. I see you out shopping, partying, grilling steaks every weekend, getting the latest cellphone because it has some new trinket....don't come crying to me about how expensive everything is.

Hello there,
I live in the Middle East and have had a chance to look at the actual financial accounts of the oil drilling companies. It costs approximately US$ 2 to extract a barrel of oil from land based oil fields. it costs approx US$ 3 to extract a barrel of oil from a deep sea based oil field.
This cost has not changed much over the last 10 years. However over the last 10 years the selling price of a barrel of oil has gone from about US$ 15 to US$ 70+ today. During that time gas has gone from 60 cents to $3. The graph curve is quite proportionate.
In the USA the government has had acted irresponsibly by keeping gas prices down and encouraging consumption. There is one problem in the US. The USA has either not wanted or not been able to develop an effective cheap mass transit system to criss-cross the vast country. If the US had an effective cheap public transport system then it could have taxed gas heavily as they do in the UK and in Europe. Gas is dirt cheap in the US compared to the UK and Europe. This has encourage wasteful consumption and contributed to the USA being the main cause of pollution and global warming. With only 2.5% of the world's population the USA creates 25% (ten times) the world's pollution.
Let us hope and pray that Al Gore or someone with his sense of environmental responsibility comes to power. (Problem is Halliburton will not donate to Al Gores' campaign)

That's the big hypocritical thing. People (right and left) like to blame some aspect of the government or a certain political party for high gas prices. Even though in reality, Europe pays like $7 for a gallon, and gas is quite cheap here when you compare it to inflation.

To me it's getting higher not lower, but you know, that's based on what I know not any graphs.
And the risk seems higher, as the tensions of the world increase.
