Just as with termites, the winged ants are the reproductives. Their sole purpose is to set up new colonies .

Flying ants are the queens and male ants, normal ants are infertile. They just come out during the warm weather, they'll be gone in a day or two.

We have been plagued by flying ants and large, striped body ants all afternoon. They are all over our street, gardens and drives. It usually happens every year, but the large, stripey ants are new to me.

As was said Just the mating stage in their life cycle. No real nead to kill them though as they will vanish soon
