I agree with no1special. Dell is good - I have two. Don't have a laptop yet though because I don't want to setup and put away. Dell usually has special ads in our Sunday paper - that's how I got these. Got them on a 2-day special with free shipping.
With that said, I think HP is also good. I have HP printers and find them of good quality and the support is good - that is important, too.
I don't think I would pay too much. Everything these days seems to be of the throw-away type. Costs more to repair than to replace.

it depends on your needs
if your looking for a desktop replacement id go with the hp zd8000
if you just want a good solid light weight laptop IBM thinkpads and these are not too expensive either

If you want the best, you want an Apple laptop www.apple.com If you want an inexpensive windows laptop.. try an Acer, I enjoy my acer. Best pricing on laptops can be found at www.pricewatch.com
