Open a bag of charcoal and set it in the freezer. Should be ok in a couple of days.

I didn't know either, so I Googled...
Tip #1: I clean fridge or freezer that has rotten smells with either bleach or baking soda or vinegar, but also I remove the drip pan at the bottom of fridge/freezer either in the back or front at bottom as if the blood from the meat dripped down into it the smell will stay and only get worse. I cleaned out a fridge that had raw meat that got rotten in it and still it smelled bad till I pulled the drip pan out and cleaned it out really good. I keep an open box of baking soda in both the fridge and freezer at all times.
Tip #2: Try placing a container of vinegar in the freezer. Leave the container open.
Tip #3: Put a large bowl or pan of kitty litter in the freezer and close it for a week. Be sure to use the kind that contains chlorophyll...the green stuff...not the clay type! This worked wonders for us!
Tip #4: Try a freshly opened can of coffee. This is what they use in the trucks that they haul animal hides in.

It sounds like the liquid from the rotting meat and other food has soaked into the insulation of the freezer. If this is the case it is very hard to get the smell out. You can look in the yellow pages to see if any company in our area offers Ozone treatments. The companies that offer things like this are generally listed under disaster recovery/ clean-up specialists or cleaning services. You could also try an appliance repair shop and see if they could be of help. One other thing you can also try that has worked well for me in the past with coolers that have a very bad smell is to wipe down the inside with some vanilla extract on a paper towel and then leave the towel inside the freezer for a week or more. Leaving the freezer in the sun for a week or more may do the trick. If the fluids have leaked into the insulation they make some enzyme sprays that break down the bacteria that cause the smell and they are offered on pet supply sites. Good luck.......

i have had this very same problem one time. i had taken a freezer that was being given away due to the meat being spoiled in it for about 3 weeks. i tried everything from bleach solution , pinesol, and even charcoal briquettes. nothing worked no matter what, then i pulled the liner on the freezer lid off and pulled out the insulation and tooked some unfaced attic insulation and put back in it and guess what , the smell was gone. so check it out that may be the cause. not sure but just a suggestion.

First turn it off and scrub it clean completely.. make sure the drip pan is clean also if it has one. Then place a bag of charcoal in the freezer for a couple days. Then get a little package of lemonade koolaid mix and pour water in the bottom of the freezer and mix the lemonade mix and wipe down the inside of the freezer. This should leave it fresh smelling.
Lemonade koolaid is also good for running a cycle through your dishwasher..

Well, you gotta empty it out, un plug it and put it outside, with the doors open. If it does smell, you'll have to do something to keep the animals away, like put it in a garage or fenced in yard.
