by 5 months, everyone was houding us saying "give that boy a haircut"
all you can do is remind them that you are the parent, and they can do what they want to do on their own children. hair is hair, and will grow the same way no matter what.
ask yourself this? would you love him any less if his hair DID grow a different way?

The people who tell you that it won't grow back the same are full of it. It's too hot here to let the poor baby suffer! It's all up to you. Some parents can't bear to cut Jr's locks b/c they are just so beautiful and curly and perfect, and to others it's just hair. If you get his hair cut early and often, you won't have a screaming wreck of a 2 year old when he needs his 1st haircut.

You are the parents. There's nothing wrong with cutting a child's hair. I think the sooner he gets used to getting a hair cut the better. Otherwise, it's going to be a big fight for the next 2 or 3 years. Babies are so hot anyway. I'm sure that extra hair was uncomfortable for him.

They are wrong. The hair will grow back the same. You did you son a favour, now he is more comfortable. There is no set time to give a child a first hair cut

I would say when they are old enough to sit and be patient for a cut; (18 months to 2 years?) however, I have the same problem with my little girls bangs. I keep combing them over to the side and strangers keep asking "how old is he?" My daughter doesn't have much hair in the back of her head though so I'm not quite ready to get any of it cut yet.

It will grow back fine! My son got his first cut when he was 9 months. It was long and thick and curley. We cut it and 3 months later it all grew back again. Same texture, still the same curls. He is 16 months old and on his 3rd hair cut.

Hair changes in texture, color, etc. throughout the first couple of years whether you cut it or not. Cutting it doesn't cause it to change.
Cut it when you need to! Generally, it's best to wait till the child can sit up, though. It's a lot easier that way. ;-)

If he's happier it's ok. My son (now 14) had beautiful blonde curly hair but he wouldn't let us brush it, so we too cut it off, and i'm sorry to say he did lose his curls. But it's not saying the same thing will happen to your child.
Although I too had blonde curly hair when I was about 3, my elder sister cut it off (she was jealous, hers was dark brown and straight) my hair now is mousy and straight as a dye.

You're his parents and it is your decision. If it was long and uncomfortable for him it sounds like you made the best decision. I don't know why his hair would grow any differently if you cut it now verses if you had it cut 6 months from now.

There is no specific age set to cut your child's hair. When it gets to long is the best guesstimation. I wouldn't lend an ear to what everyone is saying. Your the parent and you do what "you" think is best. You want your child comfortable in the humidity.
