The geographical subdivision of America is North America and South America. The political subdivision of America is Latin America and North America. Then, why is that the people from the United states call them selfs "americans" and why they call to the US "America".
It is clear that the name of the full continent is "America", and not "the Americas" as many US citizens are used to think.
Can you explain such misconception?

Sure I can. This continent has been in flux since the Europeans arrived. It would take weeks to go over all the various nations that have existed or colonized the Americas since the Vikings or Columbus first arrived.

The USA was the first to break away from a colonial power in such dramatic fashion. We eventually settled on the United States of America. It is a bit conceited, but so are we.

There were no other large independent nations in the Americas. Other nations Canada, Mexico, Latin America would go through regimes and colonial periods while we kept our name.

It doesn't hurt that Europeans began calling us Americans as soon as we left the English (the English sometimes still use colonials). When I've travel Europe, I am greeted with the phrase, "You're an American". I guess the name stuck.

I don't mind it and everyone on this side of the world doesn't seem to care. I've never heard someone from Latin America, Canada, complain.

I think this has to do with the fact that it is the "United States of AMERICA" none of the other countries have "America" in their names, so that's why we call ourselves "Americans". Also, North America and South America are considered to be two separate continents. Latin Americans call americans "norteamericanos" however. We in the US do call people from South America "South Americans" and people from central america "Central Americans".

Geographically, it truly is positioned interior the crucial American area. word I suggested 'area' because crucial u.s. isn't a continent. because it truly is positioned interior the crucial geographic area of u.s., that shows it truly is component to North u.s.. Wikipedia, international Atlas and maximum pupils honestly evaluate it component to North u.s.. yet some human beings view North u.s. as specially the U. S., Canada and Mexico. those are the purely 3 international locations that make up the North American loose commerce contract. if it truly is the case, Panama is both in South u.s. or in between - crucial u.s.. it truly is honestly a mode of inquiries to which it’s not easy to get a oftentimes perfect 'maximum magnificent' answer. So it honestly relies upon on context and utilization.

Well i hate to say it buts it our ignorance. We just call ourselves americans. If you want a big long answer you could probably take a college course on it. We identify ourselves by our nationality which is in our mind is american not north american, us american just american. though keep in mind we tend to divide ourselves into enthinc groups so we are not fully united as americans until we leave the US. Every country has their own term. Ours could just be expanded to all of the americas, its just isnt. Ultimate answer is culture.
