This a prime example of the Rapture Right picking and choosing which Bible verses support their claim. The first answerer claims the OT says to kill if it is warranted.
Exodus 21:23-25
23But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
What about the NT, the one Christians read and hold most dear?
Matthew 5:38-48
An Eye for an Eye
38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love for Enemies
43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

besides the actuality that i do no longer help the demise penalty for my section, extra for a way that is run than some thing else, there's a standard moral distinction between abortion and the demise penalty. The unborn committed no crime that could warrant punishment. If the Justice equipment worked acceptable and the guy received a honest trial - the guy committed against the law that does warrant punishment. Killing the probability free = incorrect Killing the responsible = arguably no longer incorrect. of route the Justice equipment has been shown to have many flaws and there are countless probability free each man or woman is convicted because they did not receive honest trials or were tricked by using police into making detrimental statements, or are scared by using lies (typically police claiming to have info they don't truly have) into accepting a plea good purchase. For all intents and purposes the equipment is rigged. The policeman's activity isn't that can help you you, yet to construct a case the DA can effectively prosecute. to the policeman is isn't about justice, that is about arrest and prosecution expenditures. indexed the following are countless the inequities interior the equipment. some thing you're saying to the police may be utilized antagonistic to you - noting you're saying may be utilized that can help you you. Police can misinform you - you may be prosecuted or mendacity to them. The police and prosecutors are specialists in manipulating the jury a lot so as that besides the actuality that in case you're probability free and one hundred% truthful once you communicate with the police, that is trouble-free to convicted of against the law you under no circumstances committed if the police have an unreliable yet sympathetic witness who contradicts what you stated to the police or if the police do no longer keep in recommendations issues wisely and also you're saying some thing about the crime that you heard from the police yet they don't keep in recommendations telling you. till those inequities interior the equipment may be corrected, the demise penalty must be abolished.

Where did you get the notion that the death penalty was contrary to religious teachings? In fact, the death penalty is a recommended penalty in the Bible. Heck, without it, Jesus would not have been crucified and would not have died for our sins and would not have risen from the dead.

On the cross, Jesus did not save the theives from their punishment of death because that was not the important thing; he saved their souls.

As for the Catholic Church, for nearly 2 millenia it has not spoken against the death penalty. Only recently has it come out against it, for reasons that I do not fully understand.

You see, there are worse things than taking someone's life as punishment.

Gotta love the hypocrits that tell you that you need to live by the Bible word for word and then say they are for the death penalty. FUnny I thought one of the 10 Commandments that try so hard to have posted everywhere says "Thou Shall Not Kill".

I know, someone is going to say "An Eye for an Eye." My response to that is you are not taking an Eye, you are taking a Life.

The real question is, how can someone who is so religous support the slaughtering of tens of thousands of innocent people in Afghanistan (still haven't found osama yet have we?) and Iraq (why did we go there again?). And I think the answer is: there is a lot of money to be made in a war, especially in the middle east.

Bush is corrupt

Someone who is religious and "pro-life" cannot pick and choose when they want to be "pro-life." You either are or you're not. Religious people will of course throw that "eye for an eye" thing in our faces but I throw Jesus' own words right back at them "Whomever is clean of sin may throw the first stone."

Jesus was all about love and forgiveness of sins. Although entirely forgiving people may be quite out of our reach of understanding; and certainly clearing them of any crime would carry consequences for our society, we do have options. We have life in prison without parole.

I'm not a religious person, I don't subscribe to any religion. However, I attended parochial schools my entire life, I've read the Bible. I think, Jesus made it very clear. He wanted us to love our neighbor, treat our neighbors as we'd like to be treated, He didn't want us to be judgemental of others, but most of all he wanted us to learn to forgive each other. After all, that's what He will have to do for all of us sinners.

I agree. I never understood how religious people who are suppose to be so good hearted and understanding, believe in the death penalty. If thou shalt not murder is one of their beliefs then why kill? Religious people can be very scary to me.

All of those terrorists and be-headings... ..they are supposed to be religious.

Depends on what religion you belong to.

If I recall somewhere in a bible, you shall be judged by your peers, however you will be judged by God in the end. Which means, obey the laws of the land that you live in, or go to jail, serve comunity servies, get electricuted, etc...

It says in the Old Testament if somebody commits a crime of a certain magnitude he warrants the death penalty

Being religious doesn't mean being "Jesus-like", sadly. If you read the bible, there is quite a lot of killing, especially in the old testament. Of course, there are other religions too.
