This site is great for finding hotels:

Once you find one you like the look of, then look it up on http://www.tripadvisor.com/ for honest answers from people who have stayed there.
Premier Travel Inn and Travelodge have fairly good standards and reasonable prices so you may wish to just pick one of these.

Imperial London Hotels has 6,000 beds in Bloomsbury which is a leafy central London village and very short walk from Covent Garden, Soho, Oxford Street etc. They have a 'Lets go' weekend deal of bed, breakfast and evening meal for £100 or another £50 for a 3 night weekend.

I have always like staying at the Earls Court Youth Hostel, I know this is not exactly a "Hotel" but you can rent out one of the 2 bed rooms and it's in the best location and is really cheap. It's part of YHA.

There are so many hotels in London and some very good deals to be had. You could try http://www.alisonhousehotel.co.uk in Victoria. Alternatively try http://www.londonvacationguide.com as a good resourse and find good deals on hotels.

i agree - Regent, Piccadilly Circus. It's basic, clean, has been there forever and so centrally located, you'll save money on transportation.
