2002 it was estimated to have cost South Africa R16 million over a period of two years to repatriate tens of thousands of the immigrants back to their home countries

don't u think the 16m should have done something else eg. build a hosipital since people are more and more people are being infected with hiv/aids

The first answer saw not the country but the racist dictator Mugabee! How can they condemn a country for the actions of one crazy man?

Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of Africa. The most successful country on the continent and it has now been reduced to an impoverished nation whose subjects are dying from poverty and desperation, if, that is they live long enough to escape Mugabees murdering hoard.

South Africa's leadership found itself in a quandry. Both the South African leadership and Mugabee and his henchmen were terrorist or freedom fighters, however you might wish to describe them. Both know where an awful lot of bodies are buried. What alliances were made with which extremist organisations and terrorist groups. That has tied South Africas hands completely.

Mbeki was actually one of the leaders in talks to get Mandella released and in the negotiations for peace and the hand over of South Africa. That said both Mbeki and Mandela had a terrorist background. It is therefore very difficult for them to go against a former ally.

Before you condemn South Africa consider this: South Africa is being inundated by refugees from Zimbabwe who once they get there have no means of support. They therefore turn to crime. The main reason SA is seen as the world leader in crime is the Zimbabwe refugee crime wave. In additon to that they are faced with humanitarian care for them as well.

The only real way to help Zimbabwe is to remove the worst racist the world has ever known and give Zimbabwe back to it's people who have a realy fervent desire to live in peace and harmony.

Hey, ndemo! You really know how to pick 'em. Since you've been posting questions in the SA catogory, you have made me really think about my answers. Congrats on another excellent posting.

For a long time I wondered the same thing. Why don't the SA Army go in there and stablize the situation and why is our government turning a blind eye to the killings and human rights violations over there. Well, I can only imagine that we, South Africans have pretty much to do on own soil than to follow the likes of the Americans. Bombing every country they think is a threat to them.

The best answer I can come up with is PRAYER. You know prayer can do wonders. Just last week my uncle almost died and was revived my medics. Doctors gave him one day to live as he lay in intensive care. I'm glad to say that after my school in Korea and all my family in SA went on their knees at the same time, he recovered immediately and is home at this very moment.

Most people seem to think that sanctions against Zimbabwe will force the situation to resolve itself. I don't think so. When I think back to the sanctions against SA, I can only remember the little people getting the worst of it. So I suggest sending in help instead of creating more problems.

Pressure should be put on Mugabe wherever he goes. Petitioning will make him realize the global dissatisfaction against his policies. If people gather in hundreds to protest, he'll just walk the other way. But if people protest in millions...well that's another story. Re-educate people on the issue and let them participate in protest.

South Africa needs to keep in contact with Zimbabwe always. The more we communicate with this country, the more they'll know that we feel for them. I think the Zimbabwean people think we have forgotten them. Most Zimbabweans are desperate, despondent, and disempowered and need to know that someone is still looking out for them.

Everybody knows that once a state has failed, institutions have collapsed, and the nation is ruled by brute force alone, the people will not be able to return the situation to peace and economic development on their own - they will require outside help. This outside help should however be positive and not negative.

Prayer is needed!

It too late for Zimbabwe so I think a better question would be " How can the world stop SOUTH AFRICA turning into another Zimbabwe".

South Africa should stop the joke of a government thats in power and return all the illegal Zimbabweans who are living in South Africa back to Zimbabwe. Mugabe and Mbeki are related so why would he be bothered, it just means more support for the ANC who are allowing genocide to occur and is keeping it very quiet from the world. Another 20 years and South Africa will be just like every other poverty stricken African country. BUT they better do something soon as the FIFA 2010 world cup is looming.

I am going to comment quite differently on this whole topic. Your question is basically related to the crime in South Africa which some of it is coming from Zimbabwe. (people leaving Zim to come to SA)

If people want to leave a country and come to South Africa they should be able to do that no matter what their reasons are for. It is South Africa who should worry about the crime. South Africa should do whatever is necessary to prevent crime. We should not help Zimbabwe in this matter because the crime in South Africa does not concern Zimbabwe.

Basically what i am trying to say is that our South African government and president should do something about the crime in South Africa. This has nothing to do with Zimbabwe. If South Africa could do what is necessary to stop crime we not be having this problem at all.

Mbeki and the ANC are deeply indebt to Mugabe. They supported the ANC during the struggle. Now Mbeki cant stand up to Mugabe. He (Mugabe) may even have something to hold against him (Mbeki). I see the situation in Zimbabwe as South Africa's fault. Just a few words of condemnation from Mbeki could have stopped the situation when it started. Mbeki's "quiet diplomacy" was a symbol of support for Mugabe. Hence the huge devaluation in the currency during the land invasions. I was in Zimbabwe in 2004 and had lunch with some ministers as their guest. They are EVIL PEOPLE that only care about getting drunk and filling their own bellies. They are extremely proud of what they have done getting rid of the white men in their country and keeping the wealth for themselves (Not the people). They treat fellow black people like sub humans talking down to them and laughing at their suffering. The citizens are highly brainwashed. I picked up a newspaper while there and the front page story was boasting about the success, The first line of the story went like this "Dear comrades we are happy to report about our recent successes... " That is not a news report that is Blatant propaganda.
I am not a fan of Democracy because it doesn't work in 3rd world countries. Most of the time people do not know what is best for them. They are like children. Offer them a short term gain and they will give you what you want.
The whole situation saddens me and I don't see a solution.
Thanks Mbeki.

You have asked a good question and instead of people give reply your answer then they expressed their anger, condemn Mugabe and some with exercise their negativity.
I am not a politicial neither I have the right answer for you but I will contribute my opinion over your question.
We must not forget Mugabe has good legacy when it comes to lebarating Africa. Mugabe is regarded as a hero for many people who led the struggle against apartheid and colony regime in Southern Africa. I remember SADC gathered in Botswana, many people including Westerners expected condermnation over Mugabe regime but instead they condermed saction over Zimbabwe, this was a good good move for people in Zimbabwe, this is type of help Zimbabwe needs, regardless of what is happening with Mugabe regime, we must not conderm the people of Zimbabwe, we do what we can do to help them, these are our African brothers and sisters, we must acknowledge the diffent between Zimbabwe and other African countries, even South Africa is man made boarders, we were divided by our so called masters (colony) so that they can rule us.
Lets not also Zimbabwe neighbouring countries have benefited out Zimbabwe crisis, not to mentioned the increase of S.Africa export to Zimbabwe, the large numbers of fams were bought by Zimbabweans and at this point we have noted the increasement of crime in SA commited by Zimbabweans but also SA enjoys cheap labour from Zimbabwe, lets not forget Zimbabwe are ill-treated by some of Govenment officials i.e Home afrairs and Police Officers.
Lets not give up, I am sure we have enough to share with our fellow African (zimbabweans)

Thanks Ndemo for asking this question.
I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question but instead I have a question to your question. I'm just wondering why out of 193 countries that exist on this planet South Africa is expected to help Zimbabwe? I am not objecting to it helping Zimbabwe but I just need to know why. I mean a 3rd world country is more likely to receive help from the 1st world country. South Africa is still a 3rd world country and needs help itself though level of needing is not the same. South Africa is offering asylum citizenships to Zimbabweans, is that not enough for a 3rd world country to offer? I wish David M (one of the answerers above) could answer my question, he seems very informative.

Not much, as they don't have the financial power to enforce any major change unlike other world powers who don't seem to care about the problem. I believe Mbeki has tried various means to get some sense into Mogabe but so far hasn't had any success.

David_M does have a good point and as long as we have Mbeki as President - there is nothing we (South-Africans) can do!
