In my town, I called a dozen times asking for Jenny. The guy on the other end of the line became more and more exasperated, every time I called, yelling "who the hell is this?!" By the final time I called, he sounded really defeated. He knew I wasn't going to stop, no matter how much he cursed me. He just sighed and said, "yeah...this is Jenny." I hung up after that.
The funny thing is that my mom, when she got the phone bill like a week or so later, looked at it and said "what the hell are all these calls to this number?" It turns out that the number was not a local call in my area. She dialed the number, the guy answered, and she was really upset and exasperated herself. She yelled into the receiver, "who the hell is THIS?!"
You couldn't get away with that these days, what with the caller ID n' stuff.
