I had a fabulous "Gollywog"., I didn`t know it was called that name for a reason `im still not sure it was. Why do we have to be always polically correct - why can`t we just love each other and our toys without people making an issue of everything. Big ears and noddy are not allowed to sleep together- I did see a beautiful golly-you-know what ( can`t believe I just said that ) and it was advertised as a gollyman -My best friend growing up was coloured (or do we now have to say black ) ., she was the best friend I ever had, she didnt look coloured to me, she was just my best friend. I know that the younger generation is taking this on board and intergating at last, not before time, maybe then we can all have our beloved GOLLYWOGS back ., signed Heather

Oh Stuart, i think your quite a laugh
I had a gollywog too and im black. Only in my family we didnt see the golly wog as representing us as we didnt look like the dolls. I went away for five years came back and they were gone from the jam jars.
Poor me at the age of 15yrs old just back from living in africa a couple of years listening to some white lady tell me that the gollywogs were racist. I didnt understand how anyone could seriously think those dolls represented black people but the lady was convinced
All i can say is that maybe bcs there was nothing representing black people at the time a lot of whites decided the gollywog was the nearest thing too it, Someone called me a gollywog at school once, this snotty nose white kid, i beat the **** out of him and nobody called me anything again

I had two golly wogs, the first had a vacant expression, the second had a vacant expression and was called Michael Jackson since it was bought around 1984 and was clearly meant to be him, and was bought from a craft sale raising money for Ethiopian famine victims. If they look as stupid as the ones I had, I'm not surprised people would be offended by them.

political correctness gone mad that's what . i loved getting the jam jars just to collect for the golly wog badge. and i never associated golliwogs with black people they were toys not humans. as for all this whiteboard and baba rainbow sheep and not black sheep just goes to prove the lunatics have taken over the asylum

I've still got a gollywog. My gollywog was born the same year I was. (This is about when the Earth was still forming from the solar disc, but enough about me.) My gollywog is sitting on my chest of drawers along with all my other teddies.
That said, I'm reminded of the Get Smart episode where a Southern landowner confided in tones of glee, probably to Max, "I've still got a slave!"

I had a Golly-wog with orange hair. My Nan knitted it for me. Wish I kept it. It's only silly grown-ups who find it a problem and deprive other chlildren from owning a lovely golly-wog!

No you had a Golly-wog... I had one too as did my black friend....
I don't know if Black people found them offensive.. but I would be interested to know if they did.... I'm not black you see...
Its funny but alot of the politically correctness comes from the whites and what they think is offensive to other cultures, without actually checking... sometimes its political correctness gone mad!!!

Surely being compared with a much-loved children's toy with a big simey face is a compliment?
I loved my gollywog to bits! I still do. I'd be happy to be called one, I think they're great.
