Some interesting answers so far. Hitler was absolutely a disaster, but Stalin killed more of own people than Hitler did, and Ataturk killed more Armenians than Hitler ever dreamed of killing Jews and Russians. What the Japanese did to conquered peoples (especially in Manchuria & China) during WW II was beyond appalling. Oh, and let's not forget Pol Pot and the Khmer Rough in Cambodia. And all of these a**holes did their thing durnig the 20th century, so it's not ancient history.
Unfortunately, history is full of stuff like this. So, I'm going to go in a completely different direction. My vote is: the fire that destroyed the great library at Alexandria. We can only guess at what was lost to humanity...but we do know that original documents written by Homer, Pythagorus, Aristotle, Plato, etc. were all burned. Just imagine where we might be if those things hadn't been lost.

It is easy to list several actions of cruelty among humans but I think one of the most tragic events was the burning of the library in Alexandra. There was the collected wisdom of the ages at that time. Who knows how much further the human race could now be advanced if all that knowledge had not been lost. Some of that knowledge may not yet be rediscovered.

As horrible as 9/11 was, nothing compares to the destruction that Adolf Hitler and the Nazi's. Destroying Jews by experiment, stuffing them in a stove, poisoning. That is just horrible.

The introduction of capitalist ideals into religion. Though I am an ardent capitalist, through & through, I have to accept that the folks who have applied these principles to religion have done more to damage mankind than any other single factor.
What is the last war you can recall that did not have a theological profit motive?

All natural calamities have been a tragedy. I'd say the tsunami was the most destructive.

I would say two things....one.....the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ (although that gave people the option to be saved) and two...the Holocaust.
