There are three concerning things about getting your nails done in a salon while you are pregnant, two of which you can eliminate by bringing your own stuff, which most reputable nail salons won't mind:
1. Improperly sterilized instruments - Your unborn child is much more sensitive to particular germs than you are. If instruments are not properly sterilized, the effects to the fetus can be much worse than the effects to you. You can solve this by bringing your own nail tools except for disposable things they would throw away after each use.
2. Dibutyl Phthalate - This ingredient, common in nail polish brands including Essie and OPI, has been shown to cause birth defects in animals. See:
http://www.ewg.org/reports/beautysecrets/presskit/healtheffects.html
Dibutyl Phthalate can also be listed on labels as carbomer or butyl ether. There are nail polish brands that do not contain dibutyl phthalate, however, including Revlon. If you bring your own nail polish that does not include this ingredient, you alleviate this problem.
3. Chemical smells - Chemical smells, while not a major health problem, can affect morning sickness, especially when you have an enhanced sense of smell. If you scope out the salon before you make your appointment, though, you can find one that is well ventillated and eliminate this problem as well.

I hope this helps!

Acetone is the harmful chemical while pregnant. It enters the blood stream and affects the liver. If you soak your nails off (that is over exposure) it can cause jaundice in babies.
MMA has been linked to birth defects, heart problems mostly. I have been a full time nail tech for 16 years and have had three children. All are perfect. I have been careful and have educated myself with the hazards.

P.S. masks are for the nail dust, cause by filing. Customers do not need one, nor does it mean that we use the bad chemicals (MMA)

I would check with your doctor. Also ask the salon if they have proper ventilation. Above all else follow your instincts. If you get knocked over by the smell when you walk into the salon, my advice is to walk back out. It may not be harmful, but why take the chance if you can't breathe it's cutting down on your oxygen to your baby.

YES!
You'll get people here who tell you nailpolish is dangerous, salons are dangerous, etc. Don't pay attention. It's absolutely fine!
My friend works as a nail tech in a salon and has three healthy kids!

I am confident that it is safe. Some people are more sensitive than others and may be bothered by the smell of chemical in the salon.

There are a lot of things they say you cant do pregnant. Supposedly the chemicals in the air can make you sick while you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor and find out what he thinks. Normally they will have a list of dos and donts.

Yes it is...but if you are talking about fake ones.....think about letting your real ones grow. When you take prenatal vitamins your nail grow so fast, that if would have them done, you might have to get them filled sooner then normal

It is okay but you want to make sure that the place you are going to is clean. People have been known to get diseases because it wasnt clean. And if you do go, you should wear a mask.
