It disturbs ME to see it once the child is past a certain age. I do think it borders on incest or abuse after awhile. At a past job, I walked into the bathroom where my co-worker was breastfeeding her son. I was horrified, but I covered my reaction and asked gently, "How old is your son?" The boy stopped sucking, looked at me and said, "I'm six!", and went back to it. If they can walk up to their "meal" and just stand their to receive it, something's wrong. Especially if they already have all of their childhood teeth and are in school.

Globally, the average cut off for breastfeeding is at 5 Years old.

Maybe Westernised Society needs to get over itself on this one? (I'm just as guilty - feeling awkward when I see breastfeeding taking place in public- but I am trying to train myself out of this behaviour)

i wouldnt call it abuse. usually its just a bond a mother wants to share with her child. but in some cases, its the child that doesnt want to stop. i've heard that some children that have been weened will actually want to breastfeed again if they see a new baby brother or sister doing it, because they feel left out.

I don't see anything wrong with it. How is it child abuse? A mother is feeding her child. How is that abusive? Children that age don't see breasts as something sexual. They associate breasts with food. As they grow older, and see cleavage on television and women wearing bikini tops because they aren't allowed to be topless like men, THAT is when they "learn" that breasts are considered sexual in the United States.

No it isn't abuse. It is necessary for mothers in some countries actually. I know a woman that still breastfeed her child when he was turning 3.

I have heard that Doctors recommend breastfeeding until age 4. But, that is just wierd to me.

I think that's a little extreme to call it "child abuse." If the mother was denying her child anything to eat, that would definitely be child abuse.

I, too, think it's a little weird.
