Well, not only are you remarkably well mannered, but actually recognize manners for what they are - an art. I think manners are no longer in such proficient use because people are regressing - it's "cool" to be a gangster, refer to your lover as a "b*tch", be uneducated, etc. It's a shame, but chivalry and finesse are dying out. Let's start a "Well-Mannered Society" and never associate with the lower classes again? lol, and yet, at the same time, sob.

It does seem like manners are a dying art in today's society. Many factors perhaps contribute to this. Fast paced might be one. Also, we have a, as I call it, "ME" generation bringing kids into this world and these things are not getting passed on. My age group happens to be part of that me generation thing and it goes from there. Maybe too some fear looking 'weak' or like a doormat if they are polite. I've seen wealthy people send their kids to classes for manners, I always thought those things should be taught in the home. How can a child have manners reinforced if the parents themselves are not using them. I always stand in front of what someone wants me to get for them until they say 'please.'
Not meaning to sound cheesy here, but thank you for addressing this issue!

Yes manners are going by the way side. People are so busy being in a hurry and thinking about themselves that they do not take time to notice who is around them and what effect they have on others. Cell phone, fast cars, fast lanes, micro waves, quick check, TV, head phones for music, A smile and a kind word are almost unheard of. Speaking to a stranger in a store seems to scare some people. They look shocked and don't know how to react. (like you are some crazy person) Try saying Thank you that was very kind and look at their faces, generally they smile and look surprised! Sad but true! I AGREE with you.!

I like to think on the most part I use my manners, but sometimes it does feel wasted. I live in a friendly college town and most people walking down the street at least smile at each other, but in cars it is a very different thing. People tend to be ruder in vehicles for some reason. Have a great day!

Manners are not an art, they are a learned skill. Manners are declining in this country because people are constantly being told that they are the most important person in their lives, and that other people don't matter as much. This comes from the media, from religion, from family, and from society in general. It pays to be selfish and oblivious because manners are all about empathy, which takes too much energy away from being selfish. Empathy is the thing that people are really missing.

I think many people lack manners. I believe this is due to the fact that parents these days don't have the time to teach them to their children or just don't choose to. I always hold doors open for others and say thank you and please, etc. I am 25 and that is just how I was brought up. I find that those younger than me don't care about such things and actually look at you strange when you do do these things for them. People just lack respect for others in today's society.

No I don't think manners are a dying art..I think for the most part that they're already dead...I still continue to use them in the hope that the pendulum will swing back...and I still believe in treating people the way I would like to be treated.

You can't spend your life worrying about what others do, because you have little control over that. If you believe good manners are important (e.g. saying "please" and "thank you"), then do so on a regular basis and perhaps you will inspire others to do the same.
