Everybody does. Some people are ashamed of it because they got it in their head that it's somehow a sin. They usually point to the story of Er and Onan in Genesis 38. But a close reading of the story will tell you that the Lord slew Er and Onan because they were wicked in the Lord's sight NOT because of masturbation.

The reason Christians think it is wrong is because while masterbating, the person is most likely thinking or fantasizing about another person. This is called lust. Jesus says in the new testament that looking at or thinking of another person with lust on your heart is the same as adultery in God's eyes, therefore it is a sin.
Yes, many people do masterbate including Christians, but many are ashamed of it and try to stop. It is a bad habit and sin to Christians. Just like a person who smokes and becomes a Christian. It takes a while to stop smoking if they are convicted of it, because it is a bad habit that is destorying their body. But it doesn't stop overnight. Just like masterbation for some people. It is hard to stop doing overnight.
But we Christians believe that anything is possible with the power of Christ and the Holy Spririt. If a person truly gets disgusted with sinning against God then they can easily claim victory over any sin through Jesus Christ's power and death on the cross.

Honestly, I think most people do, or at least have done a few times. As for why they are so ashamed of it...there could be several explanations. Like, religion that says it's not ok to do it, or just their education, or because there are some silly people who do it everyday but still laugh at others when they admit it.

Something like 85% of the men on the planet masturbate - they don't all do it at once or the Earth would veer into the sun!

Everyone, except the elderly and people who are incapable of masturbating (the handicapped, people with no arms) do it.
If they say they don't, then they're lying.
People who say "eww! gross! I would never do that!" are completely full of it.
They do it, you do it and I do it. Everyone does it. Period.
