I have a 1992 Chevy Cavalier ( i know, a sweet ride lol) and lately it has been dying on me. It happens sporadically and only after i have driven for quite some time. it starts to buck and when i stop the car it dies. after it dies, it starts right back up but as soon as i shift into gear it dies instantly. it's not the battery because when i start it the radio starts and everything else like that. anyone here have a similar problem or know what it is?? my boyfriend thinks it might be the vacuum line. thanks for the help :)

I can tell you most likely, exactly what is wrong with your vehicle.
The lock-up solenoid in the transmission is sticking causing the lock-up clutch to stay engaged when you come to a stop.
The symptoms are when the vehicle is warm and you go over approx. 35mph the lock up clutch engages, when you step on the brake the clutch should release. If the solenoid sticks the vehicle will shudder, jerk and die out when you stop. You start it up put it in gear and it dies out. If you let the vehicle cool down it will be OK until you drive it warm or over 35mph again. This can be repaired by replacing the solenoid with an up-dated part to correct this problem. Beware some shops will try to sell you a transmission. The repair is usually about $150-200.

Take it to another mechanic who has a diagnostic machine. It could be a number of things. Try putting a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner into your gas tank after adding 20gals of gas (or 1/2 bottle for 10gals etc). It's only about 5 bucks.

Hi dear....!!
Look even I don't know where exactly the problem could be, but can be blown spark plugs, or even your air conditioner, you know if it is not connected properly to the ECM or what is commonly called the CPU. Well basically, it must be some problem with the ECM or the CPU of your car... Sorry can't help you more than this...
All the best.....!!! Take care......

You should check your radiator, some times it leaks because of any fracture and it provokes the car turned off by itself, before it gets over heated.

I just took my Corsica 1992 to the mechanic and he changed the radiator deposit and was it.

Good luck

Could be a fuel delivery problem, like vapor lock, could be a carburetor issue, could be a CPU issue. I'd take it somewhere where they can more effectively troubleshoot it then this online forum.

many actuators can cause this problem. you must use a scanner to check your sensors, including your lock up converter sensor.
