Congratulations. You may want to wait until you are well along (6 plus months.) You never know what other people will give you and gender of the baby may be important.

Don't buy many newborn-sized clothes...they are never in them and if they are, not for very long.

It's early to start buying stuff now, but definitely start saving and looking around at yard sales for what items sell for and the conditions they are in. That way if you know you can't find a gently used item you want, you know you have to save and buy new. Start talking to family about getting hand-me-downs if you have the same sex baby they did. Never hurts to be prepared and have them hold items back for you if they get other requests. Once you find out what your having or you're relatively out of the woods (12 weeks or more) buy away. Better to be prepared than not.

One more word of wisdom.... you can get clothes and stuff from yard sales and family, but for the baby shower, I'm registering for diapers and wipes, things you know you will be buying well after the baby arrives.

Congratulations!

Now, I hope this doesn't happen to you, but generally people put off buying baby things (and often announcing the pregnancy beyond to close family and friends) until they get to the 5th month mark. This is because the chance of a miscarrage drops off a lot at that point...

While it's great to be excited about the new baby, having tons of baby stuff around should the unthinkable happen is really hard on the mother.

As soon as you feel comfortable with doing so. You are gong to go through things like diapers a lot - so picking up a pack every week or so for the entire pregnancy will give you a good stock to start with, if you have the room to store it.

When you go to pick up baby items, or register for your baby shower - my advice, take someone who has a child between 1-2 years old with you - they'll be able to help you select things you WILL use, and avoid those things you won't use. Anyone who's child is older than that may not remember it as clearly what they used and didn't use.

My wife and I bought and registered for a lot of things that wound up being little or no use, while other things were absolutely indispensable

Some people prefer to wait until the fourth month, but I think now is a good time. No major purchases just yet, and definitely save boy or girl clothing purchases until later, but maybe a pack of diapers a week? Some of my friends laughed at me for that one, but I had a good supply and they were always scrambling to find the money to buy diapers, so that was one thing I was glad I did. Also how about the baby soap, shampoo, laundry soap, lotion, etc.?

I have two kids, I waited until I was about 6 months along to start getting their things. I waited for two reasons, the first one, I didn't want to get a bunch of baby things and have a miscarriage...I know it sounds awful, but that was one reason. The second reason was so that I knew the sex of the baby so I would know what colors to get. I wish you all the luck in the world, and CONGRATS~:)

Anytime is okay to buy something for the baby but if I was you then I'd wait to get the big stuff after the baby shower so you know what you already have and what you need to get...

I say pick up the bigger things now. Such as a crib, changing tables things such as that. But dont buy everything. I made the mistake in buying alot of stuff and my baby shower is coming up very soon and there is very little to buy. Congradulations :)

Anytime would be a good time to start. You don't wanna be shopping for all that stuff when your bigger and uncomfortable. Just start with a few things now, and every once in awhile get another thing to add to the collection and pretty soon you'll have everything you need.

I'm going to wait till I find out the sex of the baby. But you could always buy diapers and unisex things like onesies.
