The Syrians are not stupid. Hariri was a charismatic man, independent, and was indeed beginning to tire of the Syrian presence and meddling in Lebanese affairs. So Syria assasinated him. They never expected, nor did anyone, when they killed him that Lebanese of all faiths would hold each others' hands and cry for him. Through their unity, they finally saw that Syria pulled its troops out of Lebanon. However, Syria kept enough influence over the country. When other Lebanese spoke against it, they were also assasinated. Lebanon needed more external support to effectively build its army, cleanse Lebanese politics of Syrian puppets, and disarm Hezbollah. Lebanon asked for International help to build up an independent strong army and disarm Hezbollah, but the world was not paying attention. And Bush, by cutting ties with people like Syria, could not negotiate with them to disarm Hezbollah, and stop the killing of the sensible moderate Lebanese. Now, the Lebanese are being reproached not having disarmed Hezbollah, even though they had started to do that, as was Hariri's agenda, and were getting assasinated by Syria, with no one to negotiate powerfully for them with Syria.
