a phychiatrist are licensed physicians (MD or DO) who specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders. Their medical and psychiatric training prepares them to treat adults and children either individually, as part of and involving the family unit, and/or in a group setting. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, if needed.

a phsycologist is a specialist in the study of the structure and function of the brain and related behaviors or mental processes. A psychologist may provide psychological evaluation, assessment, testing, and treatment, but may not prescribe medications.

A psychiatrist has to go to medical school and can prescribe medicine. A psychologist get a ph.d and just talks to people. They both make a lot of money but I think the psychiatrist makes more. Really if you want to work with kids I guess you could be a school psychologist, but mostly what they do is test the kids to see if they should be placed in special education classes for slow or gifted children. Maybe a school counselor job would be good if you really want to help children. Though I have never seen them help children either, but if you are really dedicated you could try.

A psychiatrist sits in an office, interviews patients briefly and then perscribes medications that he or she has no idea of whether or not they will help or hurt the patient other than what the stupid psychiatrist has been told by drug companies who want to make money by selling as many drugs as possible.

A psychologist classifies people and usually tries to claim that every person has some form of mental illness. If any psychotherapy is going to happen, it will come from these people. However, there are many schools of psychology, and some of them are just flat out wrong--like cognitive/behavioral therapy which is basically new age B.S.

Personally, I think both of these professions are hoodoo. I think there might be something to psycho-analysis, but very few people today practice that anymore.

Psychiatry

A psychiatrist has attended medical school and is a physician and therefore holds an M.D. degree. In residency, he or she received specialized training in the field of psychiatry, in addition to all the rigorous training of medical school in general. And, just like other fields of medical practice such as internal medicine, psychiatry tends to focus mainly on the use of medications for treatment. Therefore, psychiatric training does not necessarily encompass training in psychotherapy, and, unlike the training for many psychologists, psychiatrists are not required to complete any personal psychotherapy. Nevertheless, many psychiatrists have, for personal reasons, pursued training in psychotherapy. Historically, this training has most often been in the area of psychoanalysis.

Psychology

A psychologist usually holds a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) from a university or professional school. Generally, if he or she is in clinical practice, the degree will be in Clinical Psychology (although it might be in Counseling Psychology). With the exception of the Psy.D. (a purely clinical degree), all psychologists have had extensive training in research, having completed an original scientific study—called a doctoral dissertation—as a major part of the training

A psychiatrist also holds either a M.D. or an D.O.
(Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy) They are also specifically or especially trained in the diagnoses of various form of mental illness. Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in mental illness. They are medically trained in the biomedical approach to disorders and in the use of medications; they can prescribe medications. Their main goal is to treat mental illness.
A psychologist studies human behavior and thought processes.
It is more of an academic field (like sociology or biology) and is based on science and observation. Psychology is concerned with the whole of human behavior, not just specifically mental illness.
*Clinical* psychology is the branch of psychology that specializes in understanding and helping those experiencing mental distress or behavioral problems in the clinic and/or community. Clinical psychologists have postgraduate training in mental health, psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions. Clinical psychologists do not hold M.Ds. Their practice is very different from that of psychiatrists; a lot of the times a psychologist and a psychiatrist work together in providing therapy to someone.

I'll try to put it simply. A psychologist deals with social issues/problems like a counselor. A psychiatrist deals with problems with the brain like schizophrenia, etc.
