Someone help me understand. Is Bonham considered a legend simply because he was a pioneer in hard rock music? Wasn't Black Sabbath around at the same time as Zep and if so, why didn't Bill Ward get the same recognition as Bonham?

The movie, The Song Remains the Same, had allot to do with his popularity. And being dead has also helped.
Bill Ward had no movie, and is still alive.
Neil Peart kicks *** though.

Like many musicians popularity comes with the ability to instantly recognize their sound. Bonham played a very unique kit that gave him that distinct sound. Does that make him the best, I don't know. Keith Moon and Ginger Baker both were instantly recognizable but more for there playing style than sound of their kit.

Bonham is recognized for his sheer power of playing. Sticks the size of small tree trunks and forcefull strong back beats. His legend became all the more powerfull because he is a deceased celebrity, who died at the top of his game.

I can think of many rock drummers who have better style and play. Neil Peart comes to mind.

Bonham is a decent drummer, but he's not the best by far.
He played very simple, straight-forward beats. He had great timing and his fills and solos were very good.

However, Neil Peart (Rush) blows him out of the water.
As does Carmine Appice. They're the best drummers on the planet, hands down.

Also something else to consider is, Bonham never had any formal training in playing percussion .Pretty much self taught .Now really listen to some of the complex fills and rythms he could hold.

Not THE best ever, I'm sure. My own personal choice would be Keith Moon from The Who. It's all down to people's personal preferences.
