After you use a tampon ...you'll never go back to pads..Pads are gross....Sorry but they are. Toxic shock is rare and if you only keep it in for 8 hours tops, you won't ever have to worry about it. Everyone has a leak from time to time, you may feel safer with a panty liner but I find it uncomfortable. If it comes to it I'll change my undies. Tampons are simple to use you wont even notice it.

I just learned how to use them yesterday after weeks of practice. Here are the best hints:
Start learning how to use them before your period comes. Buy some KY Jelly (i know this is gross) and practice. Make sure you can use your finger as if it is a tampon. Find the hole 1st and then let the tampon glide up into the small of your back. You might feel a little pressure in your back, but this is normal. Run around a bit and discover what it feels like. Then ASAP take it out, since you do not have your period. The best choice is Tampax pearl regular, they're awesome. Make sure the string is dangling as well. If this does not work, maybe tampons are not for you and on holiday you can do without a swim. Tampons are really rather easy once you get the hang of it, but this takes time!! Don't give up!! Good luck hun!

The risk of TSS is minimal at best. I've been using tampons for almost 8 years. TSS was associated with a particurlar brand of tampon that is no longer being sold, it was an ultra high absorbancy tampon. Staph bacteria is not normally present in sufficent quantity in the vagina to cause TSS, though the very, very slight risk is still there.
Sometimes I will wear a panty liner or something if it is a particurlarly "heavy" day and I know I won't be able to check myself every hour.
Yes, you can bleed through tampons. If you bleed heavily, I would recommend you not swim anyway because it's embarassing to get out of the pool with blood trickling down your leg from a wet tampon.
Yes, they're easy to use. Just follow the directions enclosed in the box.
Kendra, if you had toxic shock, you'd likely be dead. Stop feeding people bad information. Just being "light headed" isn't toxic shock. Toxic shock is caused by a staph or strep infection.
"People with toxic shock syndrome develop high fever, rash, low blood pressure, and failure of multiple organ systems in the body."

HONEY....tampons are a girls best friend...
They are very easy to use...just make sure that you push the whole tampon in...don't be shy! If you can have sex, you can use a tampon...you've got to pushi it all in and up...I can't over-emphasize that...as long as you've push it all up and in , you will never have a leak...(well unless the tampon is full !)
Also, the number of times you change your tampon will depend on how much you bleed. And this will change as you period comes to an end...
The best thing to do is to use them on the period before your holiday, so that you can judge how many hours you have to wait before you need to change it...in your novice stage you'll need to wear 'panty liners' to avoid accidents...but as you gain more experience you'll be able to 'feel' when you're tampon needs changing...(PLEASE don't go for a swim with 'panty liners'; tampons alone are just fine!)
TSS is quite rare...as long as you change your tampon regularly during the day (even if the tampon is not full: VERY IMPORTANT), then you should be fine. Make sure you wash your hands before and after as well...
You never have to touch another 'PAD' ever again!!!

Yes they are easy to use.... they do take some getting used to beforehand though, so have a practice to get it right... you'll know when they in properly as you won't feel them.
they can leak, so make sure you change them frequently and get the right absorbancy for your flow.
I've worn a pantyliner at the same time... especially if I'm wearing white (lol)
Toxic shock is a risk, although very rare, within the tampon leaflet it will provide you with the symptoms if you experience any, then remove the tampon immediately and get medical assistance immediately.... telling them you've had a tampon in.
They are very liberating when you get the hang of them.

Buy the Playtex gentle guide, I think they are the best. You could experience leaks if you have a heavy flow. Yes I have worn panty liners with Tampons. If my flow is heavy and I am wearing light colored clothes. And Toxic shock syndrome is caused by not changing the tampon often enough. I usually change every 4 hours.

They are very easy to use and so convenient. I have only occasionally had leaks. That was when I had a very heavy period. As long as you change the tampons frequently (4 - 8 hours), you shouldn't have any problems with TSS. Also use the lowest absorbency that you need.

if you experience leaks, use a liner. Or change into a bigger tampon. But start with the small ones, or "regular". I find playtex to be the most comfortable. Use applicator but read directions first. Change frequently or when you feel cramp in your stomach and your chance of tss is very low.

yes.
yes but only a couple times and that was after i had it in for awhile for like 6 hours or something.
Well i do because i am a heavy bleeder.
Well to reduce the chances of getting TSS dont wear it for more than 8 hours use the lowest absorbancy.
(i usually use a regular sized tampon with a heavy pad and it works fine for me) (it just depends how heavy or how light you bleed.)
