Paperwork that you will need

In order to move the application process along as quickly as possible, you will need to have the following information at hand.

* A letter of employment. (In some cases only originals are accepted, so be sure to get more than one if you plan to apply for housing with more than one landlord.)
* If self employed you will need a letter from your accountant or attorney that states your current earnings.
* Several pay stubs. (Last 4, if possible)
* A letter of referral from a past landlord (not mandatory but very helpful).
* A letter of personal reference.
* 3 months of bank account statements.
* Current tax returns.
* A guarantor letter, if required.
* Two forms of picture ID (I.E. drivers license & passport)
* Social Security Card
* Proof of citizenship, non-citizens should bring passport & Green card
* Current lease & recent utility bills (not always mandatory but helpful).

Not every landlord requires all of the above. However, having this documentation in hand will make the process faster.

Remember: Landlords want to rent apartments as quickly as possible. People often lose apartments because they do not bring the proper paperwork or documentation. Do not allow someone, who may have arrived after you but came prepared, beat you to the apartment that you want.
