It's the sports of our youth. In America, practically every kid plays a year or two of Little League. When you're hanging out with a group of kids all you need is a ball and a bat and a dozen kids can play. You learn to appreciate the game as a kid. When you get older, it's a common thread that all Americans share. Even if you don't like baseball, you know who Babe Ruth was and you have at least a basic understanding of your hometown team. For those that do like baseball, it's something that you have in common with everybody. You can start a casual conversation with almost anybody with a line like, "Man, A-Rod, huh?"
Hockey has much of the same nostalgia and alure in Canada. When you're a kid in Canada, for a century you have dreamed of growing up and scoring the winning goal in Game 7 of the final. In America, you want to hit the bottom of the ninth HR in game seven of the Series.

I think they both have their appeal, and we grow up on the lore of both.
For example, I grew up reading and hearing about baseball, the great players, the great moments, listening to Jack Buck and Mike Shannon on the radio. Now, baseball is more like home to me than anything, particularly listening to it on the radio. Mike Shannon is still going strong, and it's kind of like sitting on the porch on a warm summer day with your family- a eutopian vision, I suppose. A thinking man's game, but not too much. The pace isn't too fast, but the game can change in the blink of an eye, and the game isn't over until that last out is recorded.
As far as hockey, I've just been to a few games, but I'd call it a cold weather country's version of soccer. Fans are passionate, the arenas are raucuous, and fans are very knowledgeable. It's much the same, fierce loyalty to your team, the symmetry and the orchestration of the attack, with only the occasional brilliant player able to single-handedly score or prevent scoring.
Because we've been raised on the sights, smells, sounds and history of each, we naturally tend to maintain our passion and affection for the game.

Americans love baseball because it is the greatest game ever created. Now go back to whatever third world American hating hole in the ground you illegally immigrated here from

It's a cultural thing. Instead of telling tales of Vikings or other ancient hero's we talk baseball. Being much younger than the rest of the world our country has a young culture and history pot to dip into.

I've been trying to figure that one out myself. All they do in baseball is run around in circles and chase a ball.
