Hello:
This answer is in response to your question concerning possible deafness from an ear infection.
The most likely answer is no.
The reason I say that is because a) you would have to have repeated, multiple ear infections which would eventually lead to scarring of the tympanic membrane (eardrum), b) even if the eardrum ruptures, it does not cause deafness, you can still hear but just not as well until the eardrum heals itself, depends on the size of the rupture, if small it will close itself in a brief period. If it a complete rupture, then an ENT doctor can perform surgery to repair the ruptured membrane, c) an inner ear infection (the part of the ear that houses the little tiny bones that conduct sounds through vibrations) if left untreated, ie. chronic infection without being treated with antibiotics and steroids can theoretically cause deafness, and d) most deafness is caused by chronic exposure to high decibel sounds, ie. musicians, construction workers, jackhammer use, and congenital malformations in the inner ear.
Although theoretically possible to go deaf with an inner ear infection, I have never heard or seen someone go deaf because of this.
If you had an inner ear infection, it would be pretty painful and you would probably wind up going to your doctor anyway and thus be treated possibly with an antibiotic and a steroid.
I hope this helped answer your question and alleviate some of your concerns.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.

Yes, depending on the severity of the infection & how long it was present before being treated. I've had 10 moderate to severe infections from my allergies & colds in the last 2 years. When I had my hearing tested a few months ago, I have 9% hearing loss in both ears. I saw an ENT (ear nose throat) doctor & was told the same thing. She also said that my hearing would gradually worsen over time & I'd have to wear hearing aids by my 50s or 60s (I'm in my 30s now).

Yes. If it's an inner ear infection, the infection can cause damage to the sensitive areas in your inner ear that detect sound. Supposidly Mozart went deaf from a combination of his mother pulling his ears and repeated ear infections.

Yes i'm afraid so.
My aunt went deaf after she'd been to the hairdressers.
She'd had a perm and some of the liquid got in her ear. Two weeks later she went deaf because it got infected....

I'm not a doc... Swelling around the ear may close off the out ear canal (like an ear plug) If you were hit hard enough I guess it could damage the aural nerves - but they are deep. If the blow was able to force enough air fast enough into the ear canal you might get a perforated ear drum.

If the drum of the infected ear is damaged badly, but in this day and time this rarely happens where medical care is available.
