Someone to talk to and laugh with when times are good. Someone to be there when times are bad to give you a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. Who will give you honesty and affection and keep your secrets. A friend who values your loyalty and commitment to the relationship and does not put other ppl before you. Who cares for you and likes the fact that you have been around for a while and does not prefer fresh faces to your good old familiar face.
I speak from experience because after 13 years of friendship and then over 2 years of helping him set up as a singer, choosing songs, setting up equipment, advising on the show contents etc, working for nothing in all types of weather; getting him started in a nice shop etc my so called friend did the opposite of all the above.

Sense of humour. Good conversation. They are cultured and intelligent. Helpful, thoughtful, caring. Generous. Cheerful and jolly. Sociable and inviaitional. Have 'something about them' - unique personality traits. Their character also shines through.

They remember you (ie your birthday etc). I can contact them easily enough. Supportive. Trustworthy and honest. They give you 'honest' answers and don't just say yes to everything. Open-mindedness. Have some shared interests, and some interest which are different to mine. Accept others for who they are. Easy with other people's company. At ease with themselves.

Positive attitude to life!

I look for someone who's not afraid to be themselves no matter what. Someone who doesn't care what other people think , someone who lives their life from an optimistic view, but every now and then needs a shoulder to cry on , someone who understand me and my situations , and I , theirs, Who know how to make me laugh . Honesty, sincerity, trust, loyalty, integrity, respect, a little responsibility because i don't mind carrying a little extra , you know , all that stuff

True friends, are always pleased if something good happens to you. I've had 'friends' who are never quite that happy for you if they are, for example, not getting on with their partner, and you are. True friends can be honest with you, and be themselves. They accept your up and down days. Their friendship is unconditional. You don't tire of ever seeing them. You just know it when you find a true friend.

First, good self-esteem. I don't mind babysitting kids, but adults are a different story. Next, intelligence, open-mindedness, curiosity and honesty.

If he or she is hilariously funny and lots of fun, that doesn't hurt, but isn't necessary.
