I once wrote a five page essay on the social statement that tacos verses hamburgers were saying in that book.
I would not have got that out of the movie.

I would say the movie. I have also read the book a couple times after I saw the movie about 10 times. Both are awesome, but I would choose the movie because It follows the book so well, better than any other movie based on a book that I have ever seen. And every time you watch it you notice little details that are easily missed. Like all the LSD symbols on the bathroom wall in the bar. Or when they first get to the Hotel and the carpet is moving around and climbing up the wall, the guy on the phone says, "They chopped her goddamn head off right there in the parking lot. They were after the pineal gland. How's your momma?" (you barely notice it). Then later they have extract of pineal from a living human body.
Ive read many Hunter S Thompson books. He is my favorite autor, rest his soul. Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp and Benicio DelToro will come out to the big screen in 2008. It has been postponed until Depp finishes the Pirate movies. So, just a little heads up. Based on another HST book. E-mail me if you need some suggested reading from Dr. Gonzo.
PS. I just read STEVE's answer, which I generally agree with, but not in this case. He probally hasnt seen the movie or read the book.

ANY book is always far superior than the movie version.
Reason: a book is more detailed, and when you read it implants a visual picture of all the surrounds.
When you watch a mystery, for example, there may be a clue right in front of your face, say in the far left side of the scene there is 1/2 a glass of wine, but you are not focused on the glass, you are focused on the dialog, or the action taking place in the scene, so you miss the clue.
When you read the book, you view the complete picture.

The movie was a whole lot of fun, and a minor historical document. But the book, when it came out, had impact. It was representative of a portion of the American mindset. Read a little history of the time, for context, then read it again. Really try to see where Hunter was coming from, besides a box of beer and a bag of pills that is.

I usually find the book much better, but in this case the movie version was wonderful. I love it every time I see it. Makes you think and feel.

Reading the book instead of viewing the movie is the best way to see what the writer designed. Reading uses your imagination, hones your reading skills, and can improve your vocabulary
