Why would some people seem shocked if you said looking at the stars is "looking at other people's suns?'

I would hope that most people learn this by 6th grade. However, I did my graduate thesis on a topic called "alternate conceptions" which looks at why people will learn information about a topic and then forget that information and go back to what they may have heard as a child. I would expect that many people actually had a teacher explain that the sun is a star, and then gone back to what parent or their own observations tell them that "stars are not seen during the day so the sun can't be a star."

It really depends on what you (and they) mean by saying "star".
From any practical experience, the "sun" is quite a different thing than the "star", so the sun is not a star. Period.
Only we modern westerners with our wacky theories have decided that sun and star might be essentially the same thing at different distances. Only people who know and believe that theory will call the sun as "star". The rest of the world sticks to the more natural interpretation.

Believe me I know really not that many it's a little scary that a lot of people do noy even know it's a star to begin with.
