An amazing movie, one of my top 5 scary flicks of all time. Kubrick is of course great with the cinematography, and all 3 main actors are great. Freakin scary.
The book is great of course, King is amazing, but really different, especially the ending. You get a better feel of the hotel (since you're with it for a longer time.
The TV movie remake was...let's just say not so good. King tends to not be able to translate his books to movies very well (Kubrick did the old film, King re-did his new one.) Changed the ending back to the book's ending, and Weber doesn't do too good.
There's the whole thing...

The Shining is a great book . The book is about a family man and writer who loses his temper and gets fired from the university where he is an English Teacher. He is given the opportunity to be a care taker at the Overlook Hotel A big luxury resort hotel situated in the mountains of Colorado. Danny, the writers son has an imaginary friend named Tony who shows him things that haven't happened yet. Tony is scared of the hotel, but the rest of the family doesn't realize it's haunted until they are snowed in for the winter and its too late to get out. The movie is good too, but some of the details and the ending are different. They actually use two different hotels in the filming of the movie. The outside shots are of "Timberline Lodge" in Oregon. A beautiful ski resort where its not uncommon to be able to ski year round. The indoor shots are of some fancy hotel in Boston. Steven King didn't like the casting in the movie as he thought it would be scarier to show a sane man going crazy with the isolation and hauntings, and Jack had just finished "One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest" and would seem sorta crazy from the begining also Shelly Duvall just looks crazy all the time. But if you like Stanely Kubrik directed movies you'll love this one. It is one of his best.

The Shining starring Jack Nicholson is by far the best movie based on a book by Stephen King. Its the kind of movie you watch and you never look at the clock, you wont get up to pee, you just dont want to miss anything.

I've both read the book and seen the film, but i have to say i was much more impressed with the book. After i read it, i was really looking forward to the film, but it was a let down. There were too many things which had been changed. For anyone who hasn't seen or read it, I say forget the film and just read the book.

Yes, the classic with Jack Nicholson. The best scene is when Shelly Duvall is noticing his wierd behavior. She finds the crazy pages he typed ("All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy") and freaks out when he's standing behind her. She has a baseball bat and when he starts walking toward her, she starts backing up the stairs, taking weak swings at him.
He says to her, "I'm not going to hurt you.....I'm just going to bash your brains in!"
What a great moment.
The newer remake featuring the guy from Wings was pretty good. I'm usually against remakes, especially of a classic (How do you re-do Jack Nicholson, for cripes sake?!?!) but this one was pretty good. It had great special effects.

Scary. Saw it the night it premiered. Was 17 and had nightmares about it that night. Never had that happen before that, never since. Book was OK, but different than the movie. Not better just different.
