Of course telemarketers are using recordings, and HECK YEAH it's annoying when they call. Two best lines of defense: (1) Put your phone on the National Do-Not-Call list at http://www.donotcall.gov, and (2) If you can find one, get a phone or an answering machine with a TeleZapper -- every time it answers the phone it emits that three-tone noise you hear before the recording tells you the number you have reached has been disconnected. It fools the computer-automated dialing programs into thinking your number has been disconnected, so the computer removes your number from its list.

They use recordings now because of the no call law. Also if you actually let the long winded irritating recording end, some of they tell you to press one to be added to the no call list. They can get by with calling until you tell them to take you off the list. Most people will not wait until the end of the message, therefore they can continue to call. So be patient and wait until the long boring temper raising message is over.

Its even better when you answer the phone. You say hello and there is a 5 second pause, then the recording starts.

We get messages on the machine that tells you to press a certain number if you want to do this or press another certain number for that. It does stop after a number isn't pressed.

Yes, they are doing this. Join the Federal Do Not Call List and they wont bother you. Only companies you do business will bother you.
